Bruchko

Summer Reading: Bruchko

The astonishing story of a 19-year-old American - his capture by the Motilone Indians and his adventures in Christianizing the Stone Age tribe.

Have Y'all been reading? I highly recommend it. Bruce Olson tells his story of how he ended up with the Motilone tribe in a moving way. His story reveals how God moved in his life and worked to reshape how he reached out to people. I found myself really captivated by this book.

Here is a start to some thoughts on the readings, please share any quotes that stuck out to you or anything else that got you thinking about how we do ministry.

Provoking Quote:

"Take me out of the way and speak to them in their own language so they see You for who you are...

O Jesus become a Motilone."

Questions:

How do we get in the way?

How have you seen Christ show up in a different way than you knew before?

How are you being faithful?

So it's February and most of you are already involved in a ministry which hopefully means you have developed relationships with those you are walking alongside of in ministry, both Point Loma students and those in the community, but how much do you know about the other ministries? We thought it'd be enriching for both those involved and those who want to know more, to have the leaders talk a little bit about the ministries they lead, challenges they've faced, etc. So as I receive them, I'll be adding little glimpses into each of the Student Ministries. Wait, you know what; we leaders aren't super-Christians nor do we have all the answers. We are simply working to bring about the kingdom of God just like you, so as fellow ministry partners, please feel free to share as well. I'll put some questions up here and you can share your experiences in SM so we can all celebrate the work Christ is doing in the city of San Diego!

Ok, here are some questions to get you thinking, but share whatever you would like.
-How did you get involved in your ministry?
-One way in which you have seen God work in your ministry this year.
-How have you been challenged in your ministry?
-How have your perceptions on ministry changed since being involved or have they?

Thanks so much for being involved and be sure to check back often to see Christ's redemption being brought about!!!!!

Why are we so busy?

So it's almost the end of the second week already and I don't even feel like I'm in school or really processing what's going on because I am just so darn busy! It's something I've struggled with my whole life-wanting to be involved in everything I could get my hands on and being fairly successful at most of them without having a mental breakdown. But the more I learn about Jesus and his life, the more I find it impossible to convince myself that being busy equates living a fulfilled life.

Right now Student Ministries is consuming a lot of my time. And I love it. I love organizing and planning and being able to talk to whoever comes into the lounge. In fact, one of my highlights today was when Justin came in and told me that 17 or 18 people went with him downtown last night for Wed. Night Outreach...and it was only their first night!! And working with/learning from Becky is a privilege beyond measure. Maybe I'm just complaining and not used to working 20 hours in addition to a full school load and living off-campus. But it makes me question if that is something we should become used to. Should we want to get caught up in the demands of the world to "be the best" and "reach for the stars" and "climb the corporate ladder"? My gut says no.

So I'm asking anyone who is reading this to challenge me to take it slower. Deliberately take time to relax and pray and reflect on what's going on. To say no to good, well-meaning things that will distract me from following Christ. To make time to go to the park with the kids down the street and have lunch with my housemates and listen. To find our Lord in the times of stillness and with a whisper.

1 Kings 19:11-12
"11
The LORD said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by."
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper."

The life of Jesus

"But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body."

2 Corinthians 4:7-10
